It’s that time again when we all need to start thinking about refilling our wardrobes and since the best fashions seem to sell out within the first month of hitting the shops, you’d better be quick! Autumn and winter trends usually bring with them an abundance of black, this year however is proving to be a little different and many of the runways have been showcasing a more baroque romantic vibe, with deep rich reds, clarets, navy, orange, camel, soft greys and even whites.
This theme certainly plays a major part when it comes to this season’s fabrics; the catwalks were awash with an array of wonderful materials including velvet, lace, fur and also sheer and sexy silks. The romance continues with capes of every kind and an abundance of ruffles, but the favorite look seemed to be the wide swinging 40s and 50s-style skirts. The best thing about this trend is that there is something to suit everyone; many of this season’s styles have been designed with both reality and practicality in mind and are much easier to wear than some of this year’s previous style! Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton are two designers that have perfectly echoed this season’s 50s style. Models coveted nipped-in waists and sported over the top A-line mid-calf skirts; this is certainly a perfect look for both day and evening - simply add a pair of heels and a few statement accessories in order to transform the look. Look to the hit drama Mad Men for inspiration on how to wear this trend. This season is all about craving the fuller figure, which is achieved through the introduction of longer hemlines and a late 50s or early 60s silhouette. This season’s skirts come in a range of shapes including full below-the-knee circle skirts, created in heavier fabrics such as wool blends. Granny skirts, which are usually much longer and gathered or pleated in style and often sport a ruffled hem, are another item in style for this season. This particular skirt doesn’t puff out as much and is therefore a little more understated in style. For best results you should pair this skirt with either a fitted top or sheer blouse, either piece will add a sexy edge to an otherwise subtle outfit. Accessorize with a cutesy pair of bobby socks, as seen on the Marc Jacobs catwalk. For a sensual early 60s look, opt for the statement pencil skirt. This is the ultimate piece in creating that 1960s hourglass silhouette. Invest in a skirt that is both high-waisted and finishes just below the knee in a straight style. Read more information here
